Service Fuel Tanks and Feed Water Heater This photograph is taken 180-degrees from the previous one and details the two side-by-side kerosene service tanks at the lower right in the picture. The upper right shows the exhaust duct while the upper left is the bottom of the burner. The long cylindrical tube cutting though the center of the photograph is the feed water heater. Exhaust steam from the engine passing through the cylindrical tube which contains a loop of water tubing allows the exhausted steam to preheat the water traveling to the boiler. Because the exhaust steam contains steam cylinder oil, any leaking connection will eventually coat the surroundings with steam oil and dirt. |
