Boiler Restoration

Installing A 538-pound Boiler

After the boiler passed it hydrostatic testing the piano wire was given a heavy coat of steam cylinder oil.  A 1/2“ thick blanket of ceramic fiber high temperature insulation was laid over the wire, and a thin stainless steel protective cover applied as protection.  The same fixture that was used to rotate the boiler for wire wrapping was affixed to the boiler and used as a means to suspend it for dropping onto its mountings at the front of the car.  An automotive engine hoist with an extension provided an excellent means of controlling and easily maneuvering the boiler as it was placed on its steel frame.  In the lower right corner of the photo is the burner and superheater ring awaiting attachment to the underside of the boiler.
